WHIRLWIND

Military Coup in Fiji

What a whirlwind our lives have been caught in over the last weeks and months, culminating in the overthrow of the Fiji government by a military coup, yesterday, Tuesday afternoon (5th Dec).

Because we live and work and minister across these islands by permission of the ruling authority of the day, we obviously need to be sensitive in what we report and say. We therefore simply ask you to pray earnestly for the people of Fiji right now. Pray for Nazarenes and other Christians, that in the midst of these deep waters, they would not be overcome – in the midst of this fire, they would not be burned. Pray that God would not allow this great opportunity for Christians to be Christians, to be wasted. Pray for our District Superintendent, that he would have discernment and godly wisdom in his decisions. Pray for the safety of our pastors as their lives and the lives of their congregations are thrown into the turmoil of such deep uncertainty.

Marshal Law in Fiji

A ‘State of Emergency’ has been declared placing Fiji under ‘Marshal Law’. Pray that there would not be bloodshed and civil unrest and that law and order would somehow prevail across this island nation. Pray for Christians at the highest levels of the Fiji government – that somehow today they would immediately hear the clear voice of the Lord, giving absolute godly direction in the midst of confusion with this nightmare for them and their families. Pray also that our church properties would be protected, including churches, mission homes and our vessels and equipment.

Cindy and I recognize God’s direct leading during this last week, as our own church leaders gave us the option of flying our family out of Fiji to our South Pacific Field headquarters in northern Australia. How we thank God for this awesome church structure called ‘Nazarenes’! Pray for us as we determine how best to return to Fiji as soon as possible to continue fulfilling God’s calling on our lives specifically in that island nation. We are very aware of the limitless potential of reaching out in the name of Christ to the countless families in Fiji already devastated by what is taking place.
